Retro - Sunday Adda 1988

After I left CRHSE Tirupattur I found that Sriram no longer had a room in Men's Hostel as he became an intern. So I stayed at the home of Prakash, a lecturer in Sociology who was from Karnataka and his wife Sr Ratna (who was Bengali) when I visited Bagayam. Sunday mornings were a long adda. In Bengali and Kannada and lingua franca Tamil. But also Hindi and ocassionally Oriya and less often English! People dropped in. Dr Manjunath, the Ayurvedic doctor, and members of the JayCees as well as a few Biostatistics staff. And we all had a great lunch together. A few years later Tarun was doing his DCH and he introduced me to Supradip and his wife Lipi in Vellore. Supradip worked for a bank and was a great motivator for blood donation. I distinctly remember Sam (Tarun's son) playing with Supradip's daughter. He was asking the toddler "Mook Enge?" and she pointed to her nose, "Buno, Vai Enge"- so she pointed to her mouth, and then spying a soft toy, "Buno, Kukur enge?" We roared with laughter and named the new mix "Kukur Enge Bhasha"! She pointed to the toy puppy! Kukur means dog in Bengali!Supradip was also an organizer of the Vellore-Ranipet Bengali Durga Puja.Of course it started with a CSI priest, a bearded Sardar, a Maulvi praying for communal harmony before the event. And the song and dance competitions were in Tamil and Bengali. In fact one year a prize went to a now older Senjuti Supradip dancing "I'm a Barbie Girl" We met again this Sunday (September 27th, 2026) at the Tagore Society project in Rajnagar block for a health camp. TSRD has been running an education project there for 3 decades. It started in Pannalal Dasgupta's time and was supported by Gayatri Chakravarty Spivak. There have been some amazing results- we met Ujjwal from village near Bandi, who has done a BSc in Chemistry
